When the Germans wrote the standard for the DK, were they looking into the furture - what they eventually wanted to see in the breed? Or did dogs that fit the standard exist at the time?
What is the opinion of how the breed has moved foward in both conformation and versatility?

This is question for somebody 80 years old involved in the club. I don't think any one knows as much info as you looking for in here, why the did thinks the way the they did?
I,m sure as they change thinks they did it for the better, but as what problems had arise in the breed thru out the years I don't know

Hello Pixxie, I think ,they are looking the future in the first standard, because the DK's in the beguining they were very heavy and with many problems, in conformation, balance, type and temperament. So, the standard is the way for develop the new breeds. The standard is an idea of the ideal dog.

If you google German Dog Organizations, such as the Delegierten-Commission which was established in 1879 to oversee the formation of breed standards initially for hunting dogs but later for other working dogs and companion dogs you can find much historical information. This eventually led to the formation of the JGHV, which I also wonder in amasement how these tests were first originated. A couple of years ago I googled "utility dog" and found NADKC and now I have a wonderful 16 month DK based on over a hundred years of good breeding.
