Can I get an explaination of the purpose of testing the dog on the blind in the water portion?
I get that we need to see if a dog can search and retrieve.
Is there more we can show about our dogs during this test?

is all about independent search and retrieve of a down game in which the dog has not see falling in the water........ basically they want to see what the dog will do after he finds the duck IMO......it is not about the search as much,is the dog going to retrieve it?.... leave it on the other side?..... , eat den duck?.... in this aria i see and evaluated many things, cooperation - obedience - retrieving. even desire of the dog to do the task

All it depends what the dog will do? JMO

take care

If a dog is going to fail this or get a lower score what would be the likely reason?

The most likely failures would be leaving the duck once it is located....taking it to the other side and chewing on it...lots of different nightmare scenarios come to mind  lower score would most likely result from having to over handle the dog to locate the duck or issues on entering the water..running the bank etc.

Would these be considered training blunders or breeding issues?

I tend to lean toward training blunders.

More like it is training , but it can be generics, harsh training or allot of pressure with out praise will do allot of damage in the retrieving manners
